Angela Alioto has second thoughts on social justice

Image
Angela Alioto is an elected supervisor in San Francisco and the daughter of a former mayor (he was mayor when I lived there is 1975). Supervisor Alioto has been a proponent of many progressive social policies, e.g., needle exchanges, sanctuary city and decriminizing theft. She also supported major increases in programs that deal with the homeless. She now admits her policies were wrong.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Not only that. She also suspects that there is massive corruption and fraud in these programs, particularly the programs dealing with the homeless. This is per her statement in a video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDHPgZyKNPA.

A Successful Moussaka

Image
I have been trying for several years to make a tasty moussaka using a ground chicken/beef blend and without the bechamel on top and without all the spices that recipes require. I use the chicken/beef blend because with my gout I am not supposed to eat a lot of beef. I don't do the bechamel on top because a good bechamel requires butter and milk. I also dont use a lot of tomato sauce because Ann has problems with that. One of the main fundamental problems is that ground beef these days doesn't come with much fat (and ground chicken with almost no fat) and that means the flavoring is more difficult. For this past weekend, I used a lot of MSG while cooking the beef and this seemed to do the trick of having a good flavor. I had read that MSG was on the 'bad' list years ago but has been rethought and is now not on the bad list (not that it made the good list).

The War on Drugs - Second Thoughts by Many

A long chain of tweets in response to some from Alexandria Brown, an instagram influencer, on this. Points include: Didn't think drug abuse would get so bad. Thought treatment would work better. Didn't realize drug abuse would destroy people like it does. https://twitter.com/alexthechick/status/1691422798411894785

I Was Mostly Wrong about Saying "the US has too many Ports"

Image
Back shortly after the turn of the millenium I attended several transportation conferences and made a point of asking speakers if 'There are too many ports". I also, made some comments on various papers, presentations, etc. to that effect. I specifically used the example of Florida, which had 10 seaports and the Mississippi river, which had a number of River ports. It seems I was wrong on the Florida issue, although maybe right on the Mississippi river issue. The reason I was wrong about Florida is that I did not foresee that extent to which the 10 ports could specialize so each would contribute enough economic benefit to justify the landside investment that Florida and the USA would have to make. Also, I did not foresee the extent to which the capacity of the west coast ports, specifically LA and Long Beach would be constrained by various policies that limited their operational efficiency. This capacity problem on the west coast has made the east coast ports more impor

A Black Professor Trapped In Anti Racist Hell

Image
Summary: Professor Vincent Lloyda, Director of Africana Studies at Villanova, experienced horror while teaching a seminar for advanced high school students. The class was influenced, then taken over by two college assistants. The class at the beginning was happy and engaged intellectually, then unhappy and cowed by endless accusations of micro aggression, race wronging, etc. ................................................................................................................................ His words: On the sunny first day of seminar, I sat at the end of a pair of picnic tables with nervous, excited 17-year-olds. Twelve high-school students had been chosen by the Telluride Association through a rigorous application process—the acceptance rate is reportedly around 3 percent—to spend six weeks together taking a college-level course, all expenses paid. The group reminded me of the heroes of the Mysterious Benedict Society books I was reading to my daughter: Each teenager,

I thought I was Saving Trans Kids

Jamie Reed, self identifying Progressive, got a job in 2018 with the Washington University Transgender Center at St Louis Children's Hospital. She was a true believer in facilitating gender transitioning of children in their early teens. After several years of seeing the results of this she is working with a Republican State Attorney General to stop the gender transitioning of children. Below is her report There are more than 100 pediatric gender clinics across the U.S. I worked at one. What’s happening to children is morally and medically appalling.
